The classic symbol of man seeking fortune from nature. Despite their rough appearances the miners ranged from (normally) well-heeled lawyers and other gold hungry professionals on down to your common rustlers. However varied their backgrounds were, they all acted together to prospect and develop early California into what it became. Although this occurred at tremendous cost to the natives, and some natural resources, the figure remains the hero of California for laying the trailblazing groundwork for statehood.
